Communities that no longer need us: able to educate their children, treat their sick, draw clean water and withstand the next shock without an external appeal.
A vision with an exit in it
Most charity vision statements describe a permanent role for the charity. Ours describes the opposite. The measure of a programme is how quickly the community running it stops needing our money.
That shapes what we build. Vocational training rather than indefinite cash support. Solar pumps rather than diesel, because the running cost is what eventually closes a well. Local contractors rather than imported crews, because the skills stay behind. School fees paired with teacher salaries, because a funded pupil in an unfunded classroom learns nothing.
What we are working towards
- Education that continues without us. Schools funded to a point where local authorities and families can carry the running costs.
- Water that keeps running. Every installed system under community management with a funded maintenance route and a trained caretaker.
- Health services within reach. Permanent facilities where population density supports them, mobile provision where it does not.
- Households that absorb a shock. Income, savings and shelter secure enough that one bad season does not become a crisis.
Honest about the distance
No programme we run has yet reached full independence, and several are further from it than we projected at launch. Where that is true, it is stated in the annual report along with what we are changing.
